First Year
The primary focus of the first-year fellow will be in ablative surgery, which includes oncological resections of oral cavity, oropharyngeal, laryngeal, thyroid, salivary gland, and cutaneous tumors, as well as neck dissections. Additionally, the first-year fellow will become proficient in surgical airway management, as well as flexible and rigid endoscopy techniques.
Second Year
In the second year, the fellow will focus on reconstruction of defects of the head and neck region while continuing to build on the skills gained in the first year. This includes planning the reconstruction (including using virtual surgical planning software), raising distant and loco-regional flaps, insetting, and microvascular anastomosis. The fellow will also advance to perform endoscopic skull base surgery and become comfortable using intraoperative navigation technology. Additionally, the senior fellow will spend time rotating with our Medical and Radiation Oncology physicians, which will prove beneficial to fully comprehend the multidisciplinary aspects of care for the head and neck cancer patient.
The fellows will also have opportunities to assist our ENT and Plastic Surgery colleagues, thus enabling them to gain different perspectives and learn diverse techniques from a variety of surgeons.
