WHO: The Central Valley Higher Education Consortium (CVHEC), California State University, Fresno, University of California, Merced, and UCSF Fresno Medical Education Program have teamed up to help aspiring doctors.
WHAT: The non-profit CVHEC, Fresno State and UC will present the free-pre-medical conference “Reaching Out to Aspiring Doctors (ROAD) for the San Joaquin Valley” to help university students who are interested in becoming physicians, particularly those who are underrepresented in medicine and intend to provide care in the San Joaquin Valley. ROAD is a daylong comprehensive and collaborative conference aimed at providing students with the information, networking and hands-on skills essential to exploring and achieving their educational goals of becoming physicians. About 170 Fresno State, Fresno Pacific University and UC Merced students will take part in the event this Saturday.

BACKGROUND:
The Fresno State Foundation, on behalf of CVHEC, was selected to receive a Health Careers Training Program (HCTP) Mini-Grant through the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD). The nearly $12,000 HCTP Mini-Grant enables CVHEC, Fresno State, UC Merced and UCSF Fresno to hold “Reaching Out to Aspiring Doctors (ROAD) for the San Joaquin Valley,” a comprehensive premedical conference. Students from Fresno State, Fresno Pacific University and UC Merced were invited to apply to attend; especially those who are underrepresented in medicine. About 170 students are expected to participate. A number of institutions, programs, departments and organizations are supporting the effort. ROAD partners include:

CVHEC is one 24 organizations to receive an HCTP Mini-Grant. The purpose of the program is to strengthen the educational and social foundations for underrepresented and educationally disadvantaged students to pursue careers in the health industry. The Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development awarded more than $300,000 in the current HCTP Mini-Grant request for applications.
