UCSF Fresno’s Ivan Gomez, MD, is lending his expertise to a statewide commission charged with developing a plan to recruit and educate a diverse health care workforce to meet California’s future needs.
As a member of the California Future Health Workforce Commission’s Technical Advisory Committee, Dr. Gomez is sharing his in-depth knowledge and expertise to inform and guide the commission’s decision making.
The Commission was established in 2017 to close the gap between the health care workforce we have and the one needed to successfully deliver care in the future.
Gomez is chief of UCSF Fresno’s Department of Family and Community Medicine and program director for the California Area Health Education Center (AHEC). AHEC’s mission is to improve access to and the quality of health care for underserved populations in California through academic-community partnerships for health education and workforce training. The UCSF Fresno Department of Family and Community Medicine is a longtime statewide leader in addressing physician workforce needs in the Central Valley by placing graduates in areas of unmet need.
In his roles, Gomez is focused on collaborating to address the health care access and workforce development needs of the San Joaquin Valley and state – expertise that complements the work of the California Future Health Workforce Commission. The Commission is expected to release its plan to coincide with new state leadership in 2019.
