DOCTORS ACADEMY AT CARUTHERS HIGH SCHOOL TO HOLD AWARDS NIGHT

The UCSF Fresno Caruthers High School Doctors Academy will celebrate its second graduating class on Wednesday, May 4, from 5:30 pm to 7 pm in the gymnasium at Caruthers High School (2580 West Tahoe Avenue) in Caruthers.

All eight graduating seniors in the program will attend a college or university in the fall. Four will attend California State University, Fresno. Two will attend UC Davis and two will attend private colleges.

Doctors Academy students will receive scholarships from local sponsors including, Caruthers Raisin Packing, Gurdev Singh Gill Memorial, Kiwanis Club of Caruthers, and United Security Bank.

The Doctors Academy is an academic preparation program sponsored by the University of California, San Francisco Fresno Latino Center for Medical Education and Research. The program seeks to encourage and prepare students for careers in health and medicine.

In 2007, two rural Doctors Academy sites were developed and implemented. One was established at Caruthers High School and another at Selma High School. Thanks to funding provided by the Health Career Opportunity Program, The California Endowment, The California Wellness Foundation, and Kaiser Permanente Fresno, continued expansion of the Doctors Academy has allowed 76 Caruthers High School students to participate in the program to date.
