UCSF Fresno’s Seventh Annual Mini Medical School Shares Latest Health Information with the Public

WHO:  The Academic Senate at UCSF Fresno Medical Education Program will present a series of health-related lectures for the community.

WHAT: The public is invited to hear and ask questions of leading experts in medicine and health sciences at the seventh annual “Mini-Medical School” lecture series. Important trends and topics covering health issues for the whole family will be discussed.

WHEN: Tuesday evenings, Sept. 4, 11, 18 and 25, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

WHERE: UCSF Fresno Center for Medical Education and Research, 155 N. Fresno Street, at the corner of Divisadero in downtown Fresno. Parking is available on the second floor of the East Medical Plaza garage in the sections marked “Patients and Visitor Parking.” Participants should obtain a ticket when entering the garage and bring it with them for validation by the security officer at UCSF Fresno.

Pediatric Pearls

The Mini Med School journey begins with the smallest and most fragile patients. The field of pediatrics involves the medical care of children starting with newborns and on through adolescence. This incredible presentation will include a lively discussion about general pediatric issues and concerns involving vaccinations.

Global Medicine: Humanitarian Assistance in Haiti

Dr. Brox will share a firsthand account of his journey to Haiti and discuss the rewards and risks of global medicine.

How to Reduce Health Care Costs, Save Money, and Stay Healthy

This informative presentation will cover some of the factors affecting health care costs and practical tips to keep your body (and wallet) in good shape.

Navigating Social Services in Fresno: Advice from a Social Worker

Gerald Neufeld, LCSW

Licensed clinical social workers support the emotional and mental health of individuals and families through counseling, assistance and other services. Mr. Neufeld serves patients and their families at Community Regional Medical Center in the busiest emergency room in the region. His humor, warmth and compassion for everyone is evident. The critical need to support and expand social services within health care and beyond will be demonstrated and discussed.

Session 3: Sept. 18

Medical Informatics for Patient Health: The Future is Now

With a host of phone and web-based health tools available now, it can be challenging to distinguish the helpful products from the digital “snake oil.” Bring your smartphones and tablets and join Dr. Naz for this unique workshop on consumer health informatics. This session will walk participants through the apps and websites that can help patients understand how to better manage their medications, monitor their progress from home, and meet supportive people with similar conditions online. 

A Phone Call Could Save Your Life: Hotlines to Keep on Speed Dial

 Every day, California Poison Control fields calls from parents, paramedics, nurses, pharmacists and doctors who want to discuss poisoning emergencies. Whether you have a question or an acute exposure, the experts at the poison control center are just a phone call away and ready to answer your questions. Other hotlines save and improve lives every day. The Suicide Prevention Lifeline, Mother-To-Baby Advice Line among others also will be shared and discussed.

Simulation in Medical Education: Hands on Experiences

 Ever wonder how doctors learn to be doctors? Transitioning from medical student to physician requires deliberate practice of medical decision making skills and procedural skills prior to taking care of real patients. Lecture participants will experience firsthand the application of high-tech simulation in medical education, and learn hands-on first aid for minor emergencies like nosebleeds and wounds.

 Hands-On Workshops

Mini-Med School students will interact with high-fidelity mannequins and task trainers, including the latest technology used to teach medical students and physicians.
