FRESNO – UCSF Fresno is accepting applications for its 19th Summer Biomedical Research Internship Program, which provides Central San Joaquin Valley high school students an opportunity to gain first-hand experience with careers in medicine and valuable research skills that will give them a competitive edge. Students in their junior year of high school from Fresno, Kings, Madera, Mariposa, Merced and Tulare counties are eligible to apply.
Selected students will work with UCSF Fresno faculty members from June through August 2006 on a variety of research projects in the Fresno area. Last year, eight students were assigned to research projects involving sleep disorders, heart disease, radiation therapy, psychiatric disorders, emergency medicine and lung cancer.
In addition to conducting research, students in the Summer Biomedical Research Internship Program visit the University of California, San Francisco campus and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, as well as observe a surgical procedure at University Medical Center in Fresno.
More than 160 high-achieving students have graduated from the program, which began in 1988. Many of the students have gone on to pursue studies at UC campuses and other prestigious universities.
Students are selected based on academic merit, their responses to a questionnaire, and interviews and letters of recommendation from their teachers. Thanks in part to the generosity of the Bertha and John Garabedian Foundation, every participant will be awarded a stipend.
