The UCSF Fresno Latino Center for Medical Education and Research, in partnership with California State University, Fresno and Fresno Kaiser Permanente will present the fifth annual “Medical Mania Conference” on Saturday, Aug. 27, from 7:30 am to noon at the Satellite Student Union (5280 N. Jackson) on the California State University, Fresno campus.
Nearly 500 students in the Doctors Academy and Junior Doctors Academy programs and the Fresno State Health Careers Opportunity Program will participate in this year’s conference. All three programs, which operate under the auspices of the UCSF Fresno Latino Center for Medical Education and Research, aim to create a pipeline of students who are academically prepared to pursue careers in the health care professions and who will return to serve San Joaquin Valley residents.
“The purpose of ‘Medical Mania’ is to provide a forum for students to explore careers in health and medicine,” said Katherine A. Flores, MD, director of the UCSF Fresno Latino Center. “Thanks to major support from Fresno Kaiser Permanente and institutional partners such as Fresno State, we’re able to serve more students at this year’s conference than ever before.”
Highlights of the conference include a special recognition of former Assembly Member Sarah Reyes for her contributions to health and education initiatives that positively impacted the San Joaquin Valley. In addition, the “Doctor of the Year” award will be presented to a local medical professional in honor of his or her continued dedication, hard work and support of students in the educational pipeline programs during the academic year.
Workshop topics will include:
- Introduction of health services at Fresno State
- Role of biomedical physics in medicine and neuroscience
- Exploring careers in psychology
- The road to health professional school
