UCSF FRESNO LaCMER, JUNIOR DOCTORS ACADEMY AND DOCTORS ACADEMY PROGRAMS PRESENT A HEALTH EDUCATION AND LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

FRESNO - The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Fresno Latino Center for Medical Education and Research (LaCMER), Junior Doctors Academy and Doctors Academy will host the Fall 2014 Health Education and Leadership (HEaL) conference, tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 6 from 8 am to 2 pm at the California State University, Fresno Satellite Student Union. All students enrolled in the UCSF Fresno LaCMER middle school Junior Doctors Academy and high school Doctors Academy programs, along with their parents are invited to attend the biannual conference.

The event complements the rigorous academic program provided by the Junior Doctors Academy and Doctors Academy for students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are interested in the health professions. The primary aim of the UCSF Fresno-LaCMER Doctors Academies is to help prepare youth to enroll in health professions schools and become healthcare providers for medically underserved residents in the San Joaquin Valley.

The conference will feature keynote speaker Andres Anaya, MD, who overcame numerous challenges to become a physician. Anaya is a UCSF School of Medicine graduate and is currently conducting residency training in the UCSF Fresno Emergency Medicine Residency Program at Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno.

Parents and students will have the opportunity to learn about numerous health professions by attending workshops presented by health professionals including:

Dr. Sidney Carpenter, MD, a pathologist from Kaiser Permanente Fresno; Lydia Herrera-Mata, MD, a family medicine physician with Sierra Vista Family Medicine Residency Program; Mitra Assemi, PharmD, and pharmacy students from UCSF Fresno Pharmacy Education Program; Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers; Brian Olowude, PhD, a psychologist from Fresno City College; Rene Ramirez, MD, emergency medicine physician and Veronica Ramirez, MD, a pediatrician along with many other local professionals.
