Applications are now available for Valley high school students to apply to the University of California, San Francisco, Fresno Medical Education Program’s (UCSF Fresno) 16th Summer Biomedical Research Internship Program (SBI). High School students in their junior year may apply to work with members of the UCSF Fresno faculty on a variety of research projects in the Fresno area. The summer program runs from early June to early August.
Students will be selected based on academic merit, their responses to a questionnaire and letters of recommendation from their teachers. Students from Fresno, Madera, Merced, Kings, Tulare and Mariposa counties may apply.
To obtain an application, applicants should log onto the UCSF-Fresno website at http://www.fresno.ucsf.edu/ospr/sbi or call the program administrator Sharon Hutchinson at (559) 243-3607.
In the past years, 132 students have participated in the SBI program at UCSF Fresno. Last year, 10 students were assigned to research topics such as surgery reconstruction, alteration of gene expression, and studies in epidemiology, radiology, emergency medicine and infectious diseases. As part of the summer program, all students visit the main campus of UCSF in San Francisco, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, observe surgery, tour the emergency department at UMC, and visit the current research sites in Fresno.
The deadline for applications is Friday, February 28. Applications should be mailed to UCSF Fresno OSPR, 2615 East Clinton Avenue, Fresno, CA 93703. The Bertha and John Garabedian Charitable Foundation has donated funds to the Summer Biomedical Research Internship Program to assist with the stipends the students receive.
