Applications are now available online at http://www.fresno.ucsf.edu/sbi/ for Valley high school juniors to apply to the 17th Summer Biomedical Research Internship Program of the UCSF Fresno Medical Education Program.
Students will work with members of the UCSF Fresno faculty on a variety of research projects in the Fresno area. The summer program runs from early June to early August.
Students will be selected based on academic merit, their responses to a questionnaire and letters of recommendation from their teachers. Students from Fresno, Madera, Merced, Kings, Tulare and Mariposa counties may apply.
To obtain an application, log onto the UCSF Fresno website or call program administrator, Sharon Hutchinson, at (559) 243-3607. The deadline for applications is Monday, March 1. Applications should be mailed to UCSF Fresno Grants and Research Office, 2615 East Clinton Avenue, Fresno, CA 93703.
In the past years, 142 students have participated in the internship program. Last year 10 students were assigned to research topics such as surgery reconstruction, alteration of gene expression, and studies in epidemiology, radiology, emergency medicine and infectious diseases. As part of the summer program, all students visit the main campus of UCSF in San Francisco, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, observe surgery, tour the emergency department at UMC, and visit the current research sites in Fresno.
The Bertha and John Garabedian Charitable Foundation has donated funds to the Program to assist with the stipends the students receive.
