UCSF FRESNO OFFERS STUDENTS HANDS-ON MEDICAL RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

FRESNO – UCSF Fresno is accepting applications for its 20th Summer Biomedical Research Internship Program, which provides Central San Joaquin Valley high school students with the opportunity to gain first-hand experience in careers in medicine and valuable research skills that will give them a competitive edge. Students in their junior year of high school from Fresno, Kings, Madera, Mariposa, Merced and Tulare counties are eligible to apply.

Selected students will work with UCSF Fresno faculty members from June through August 2007 on a variety of research projects in the Fresno area. Last year, nine students were assigned to research projects involving sleep disorders, thyroid cancer, psychiatric disorders, pediatric orthopedics and plastic surgery.

In addition to conducting research, students in the Summer Biomedical Research Internship Program visit the University of California, San Francisco campus and have the opportunity for other field trips and lectures.

More than 170 high-achieving students have graduated from the program, which began in 1988. Many of the students have gone on to pursue studies at UC campuses and other prestigious universities.

Students are selected based on academic merit, their responses to a questionnaire, interviews and letters of recommendation from their teachers. Thanks in part to the generosity of the Bertha and John Garabedian Foundation, every participant will be awarded a stipend.

The application deadline is Friday, March 16, 2007. To obtain an application or more information, please visit http://www.fresno.ucsf.edu/sbi/ or contact Sharon Hutchinson at (559) 499-6669
