FRESNO - UCSF Fresno Medical Education Program wrapped up another successful recruitment period today (March 20) – this year’s Match Day. All available residency positions in the programs that participated in the match were filled, representing a 100 percent match rate. As a result, about 100 new medical physicians and 3 oral and maxillofacial surgery dental residents will start their residency and fellowship training at UCSF Fresno this summer. UCSF Fresno’s residency programs have filled 100 percent of available positions every year since 2011.
The incoming medical residents include Agustin Morales of Salinas Valley. Morales is a student in the UC Merced San Joaquin Valley Program in Medical Education (SJV-PRIME), which is a partnership between UC Davis School of Medicine, UC Merced and UCSF Fresno to educate physicians who are interested in practicing in the San Joaquin Valley and working with underserved communities. He was among the first medical students admitted to the SJV-PRIME in 2011. Morales is completing his fourth year of medical school with clinical rotations at UCSF Fresno and will receive his medical degree from UC Davis School of Medicine. Morales will begin residency training at UCSF Fresno in internal medicine in June along with all incoming medical residents.
Match Day occurs every year in March and is the time when medical school graduates learn where they will spend the next three to five years conducting the postgraduate training necessary to complete specialty training. Residents who wish to continue their training beyond residency also may take part in a separate Match Day that occurs in December each year. For both match processes, medical school graduates and residents typically register with the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). When the choices of the resident or fellow and the prospective medical education program agree, the computer states that a “match” has occurred.
The UCSF Fresno residency programs that participated in the NRMP match received more than 4,500 applications and conducted 900 interviews for 78 positions. UCSF Fresno fellowship programs that took part in the October/December NRMP match received approximately 700 applications and conducted nearly 100 interviews for 13 positions. The remaining programs filled available positions through another matching service or through interviews. UCSF Fresno currently offers medical and surgical residency training in eight specialties and fellowship training in 17 subspecialties.
