FRESNO – UCSF Fresno Medical Education Program wrapped up another successful recruitment period. All available residency positions in the UCSF Fresno programs that participated in the match were filled, representing a 100 percent match rate. As a result, about 100 new medical physicians and 4 oral and maxillofacial surgery dental residents will start their residency and fellowship training at UCSF Fresno this summer. UCSF Fresno has filled 100 percent of its available positions every year since 2011.
“Congratulations to all of the medical school graduates who matched with UCSF Fresno,” said Michael W. Peterson, MD, UCSF Fresno Associate Dean. “We look forward to your arrival this summer. We are confident that your experiences here over the next three to five years will prepare you to be excellent clinicians and advocates for your patients.
“I’d also like to thank our faculty and staff who worked diligently as always to make this year’s recruitment period another successful one,” added Dr. Peterson.
The names of the incoming residents will be made available to UCSF Fresno on Friday, March 17 – this year’s Match Day.

Match Day occurs every year in March and is the time when medical school graduates learn where they will spend the next three to five years conducting the postgraduate training necessary to practice medicine in the United States. Medical residents who wish to continue their training beyond residency also may take part in Match Day. As part of the process, medical school graduates and residents typically register with the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). When the resident or fellow and the prospective medical education program mutually agree on the selection, a “match” has occurred.
The UCSF Fresno residency programs that participated in the NRMP match received 5,165 applications and conducted 1,181 interviews for 79 positions. UCSF Fresno fellowship programs that took part in the October/December NRMP matches received nearly 700 applications and conducted nearly 100 interviews for 16 positions. The remaining programs filled available positions through another matching service or through interviews. UCSF Fresno currently offers residency training in eight specialties and fellowship training in 17 subspecialties.
