For the 10th consecutive year, UC San Francisco’s School of Medicine placed in the top five nationally in the U.S. News & World Report survey of best graduate and professional schools.
UCSF was the only medical school to be ranked in the top five in the nation in both research and primary care, the categories the magazine uses to assess medical education, ranking fifth in biomedical research and third in primary care education.

UCSF was also the only medical school ranked in the top five in all eight of the specialty areas covered by the survey this year: third in anesthesiology, internal medicine, obstetrics & gynecology, and radiology; and fifth in pediatrics, psychiatry, surgery, and family medicine, a specialty ranked by U.S. News for the first time this year.

The UCSF School of Nursing was ranked 18th overallamong nursing master’s degree programs, out of more than 200 schools nationwide that offer nursing master’s programs.
“The School of Nursing has a proud and rich history of training the next generation of nurse leaders, and we consistently rank among the top nursing schools nationwide in competitive NIH research funding,” said Catherine L. Gilliss, PhD, RN, FAAN. “We are working to modernize our academic programs, increase enrollment and enhance our clinical integration – all of which we believe will lead to increased recognition of our academic excellence in the future.”

UCSF also has top-ranked schools of Dentistry and Pharmacy, as well as graduate science programs. U.S. News did not rank doctoral science or pharmacy programs this year, and it does not rank dental schools.

The rankings are published in the magazine’s 2020 issue of “Best Graduate Schools.”
