Board Eligibility

All the resources and requirements you need to complete board certification.

Boards vary in eligibility and board certification requirements regarding the effect of leaves of absence taken during a house staff’s training. House staff should follow up with their training program/Program Director to discuss specific Board and ACGME RRC requirements related to any leaves of absence.

UCSF Fresno requires all medical trainees to have either an active California Postgraduate Training License (PTL) or an active California Physician’s and Surgeon’s (P&S) license to practice medicine.

All dental trainees are required to have an active California Dental License by the end of their PGY2 year.

California Medical License

Postgraduate Training License (PTL)

Trainees from Board-approved medical schools entering a UCSF Fresno postgraduate training program who have not successfully completed 12 months (for graduates of U.S. or Canadian medical schools) or 24 months (for graduates of international medical schools) of ACGME-accredited postgraduate training is required to obtain a PTL within 180 days after enrollment. If a PTL is not obtained within 180 days after enrollment, the trainee must cease all clinical activity in CA until a PTL is issued.

A PTL is not renewable but may be issued up to an additional 90 days (certain conditions apply) if the trainee/PTL holder is required to be enrolled in the training program longer than 12 months (U.S. or Canadian medical school graduates) or 24 months (IMG) or to allow the PTL holder to continue training while transitioning to a P&S license. The Board is authorized to extend these timeframes within its discretion.

American Board of Surgery

The ABS requires 48 weeks of full-time clinical activity in each of the five years of residency, regardless of the amount of operative experience obtained. The remaining four weeks of the year are considered non-clinical time that may be used for any purpose.

The 48 weeks may be averaged over the first three years of residency, for a total of 144 weeks required in the first three years, and over the last two years, for a total of 96 weeks required in the last two years. Thus non-clinical time may be reduced in one year to allow for additional non-clinical time in another year.

All time away from clinical activity (i.e., non-clinical time), including vacation and time taken for interviews, visa issues, etc., must be accounted for on the application for certification.

For documented medical conditions, including pregnancy and delivery, that directly affect the individual (i.e., not family leave), residents may take an additional two weeks off during the first three years of residency, for a total of 142 weeks required, and an additional two weeks off during the last two years of residency, for a total of 94 weeks required.

All training must be completed by July 1 to be eligible for that year’s Qualifying Exam. Applicants who are unable to complete their residency training by June 30 of their chief year must notify the ABS. All residency training must be completed by the end of August to be eligible for that year’s General Surgery Qualifying Exam.
