UCSF Fresno offers medical students a variety of opportunities in psychiatry, including
- Traditional core clerkships in psychiatry for UCSF third-year medical students
- The San Joaquin Valley PRIME initiative, a collaboration between UCSF, UC Merced, and UCSF faculty at UCSF Fresno, as researchers, educators and leaders in the field of health care in the Valley. Students accepted into the SJV PRIME spend their first 18 months at the main campus in San Francisco and the next two-and-a-half years at the UCSF Fresno campus. The PRIME program is a tailored track at UCSF School of Medicine for medical students who are committed to ensuring high quality, diverse and well distributed medical care to underserved patients in California’s San Joaquin Valley.
- Elective fourth-year clerkships in psychiatry, which are open to both UCSF and visiting students. Please note: Available space is extremely limited. Before applying, interested candidates must reach out by email to [email protected] and provide the following
- CV
- Letter of interest in the program
- USMLE or COMLEX board scores
- Desired rotation dates
The residents in our program are actively involved in teaching medical students from all these programs. These teaching opportunities take place in the acute inpatient service, outpatient services, emergency room, and the consultation-liaison service.

I am very fortunate to have been able to rotate at UCSF Fresno psychiatry. The attendings are very knowledgeable and approachable and the patient population and diversity of clinical presentations made for a rich learning environment.
