The first year of fellowship is spent mainly on clinical service between MICU, consult and PFT service. These rotations provide broad experience in clinical pulmonary and critical care medicine. Extensive training in diagnostic and therapeutic techniques such as flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy, difficult airway management, chest tubes of all kinds, percutaneous tracheostomy placement and all critical care procedures is provided.
The second year of fellowship consists of MICU, Pulmonary Consult, Sleep and UCSF Transplant rotations. Approximately 30% of the third year is devoted to research. Fellows will work under the guidance of their chosen research mentor with the goal of submitting their work for publication and presentation at national meetings.
The third year of fellowship is dominated by research time and electives. Electives include trauma, neurocritical care and Cardiothoracic surgery. Approximately half of the third year is devoted to research.
Fellows attend clinics 1-2 times weekly throughout the training program. They will see their own continuity patients in a private practice setting in one of the faculty practice centers. Additionally, fellows will have the opportunity to rotate through different subspecialty clinic such as lung nodule, cystic fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension and ILD clinic.
Fellows have 3 weeks of paid vacation and 1 week of educational leave each year.
