UCSF Fresno Hepatology Fellowship

Established in 2022, the UCSF Fresno Hepatology Fellowship is a one-year program within the Department of Internal Medicine that accepts one fellow per year.

The inpatient/outpatient Hepatology Fellowship Program introduces the fellow to inpatient/outpatient management of patients with the wide range of acute and chronic liver diseases. The fellow will participate with increasing involvement, depending on the level of experience, in evaluation and treatment of patients with hepatological problems requiring hospitalization. The fellow will be expected to formulate the differential diagnosis, institute diagnostic studies and recommend therapy. Outpatient portion of the rotation includes hepatology clinics that would provide the fellow with continuity experience with the patients previously seen in the inpatient setting as well as with process of evaluation and management of hepatology patients that do not require hospitalization.

The overall goal of training in liver disease is to train clinicians who are competent to manage the broad spectrum of liver problems. This training will include acquisition of a broad knowledge of the physiology of the liver and a thorough knowledge of the management of patients with hepatobiliary diseases. More specifically, within the one-year training program, the fellow must acquire a basic understanding of liver disease in general, with an ability to recognize, diagnose, and treat all types of routinely seen liver diseases. To obtain this core knowledge, the fellow will be exposed to didactic lectures, case conferences, tumor board meetings, selected readings, and clinical experience that jointly cover all areas listed above. The clinical experience can be obtained by rotation on inpatient hepatology service, exposure to liver transplant physicians and team members, and participation in an outpatient hepatology clinic.
